Pedagogías dibujadas para tiempos de crisis - Lina Toro

Understanding is the opposite of describing, and understanding requires observation. Moreover, "the quality of understanding depends on the quality of observation". That is to say, its result does not only require the observer, but also a certain specialisation in order to be able to represent the reality that one wishes to transmit. 

Pedagogías dibujadas para tiempos de crisis is a call to a pedagogical concern that understands drawing as a way of thinking specific to architecture. It constructs a context and a conceptual framework where the books Learning from Las Vegas (1972) and Made in Tokyo (2001) are recognised as potential pedagogical projects for practising a sensitivity towards the existing, and for reacting objectively to a convulsive reality through registers and procedures supported by drawings; observations that managed to transmit transgressive project theories. Moreover, they are the substance of the combined thinking resulting from teaching, practising and researching in architecture. 

Pedagogías dibujadas para tiempos de crisis is also a kind of guide for anyone who wishes to learn and teach how to design. It offers a series of ideas on how a teaching project might be approached today: ten operational drawing assets open up an exploratory and useful route for reacting to scenarios of radical uncertainty. 

Lina Toro

Colombian architect UPB-Medellín (2001); Spanish architect approved by MECD (2007); International Doctorate ETSAM, UPM (cum laude), and Extraordinary Doctoral Thesis Award ETSAM, UPM 2020/2021, with Learning from Las Vegas and Made in Tokyo: Pedagogy and Drawing of the Architectural Project (2021). Lina practices, teaches and researches architecture. She founded dosmasunoarquitectos (2003-2013) and linatoro.arch (2014-), being awarded in 33 architecture competitions. Her built work includes: Behind the Scenes, Not Only a Car Wash (2016), CSS in Móstoles (2012), Casa Syntes (2009), Pasarelas M-30 (2007), 102 Dwellings in Carabanchel (2007). Her work has been published in El Croquis, Domus, a+u, a+t.... She was co-director of the magazine Arquitectos CSCAE (2006-2013); co-editor and curator of Monoespacios: 15 Exhibitions and Books, COAM (2004-2007). She teaches at ETSAM, UPM (2008-); IE University (2014-); and UNAB, Chile (2020-). She is a research fellow at the Real Academia de Bellas Artes de San Fernando + Fundación Arquia, NY Research Fellowship (2018); visiting scholar, Columbia GSAPP (2019); Postdoctoral Research Fellow Margarita Salas UPM (2022-2024); and visiting scholar, TU Berlin (2022-2023).
