Gego. Geometría impura - Alberto Fernández

The place that Gego's work occupies in the abstract-geometric tradition of Venezuela, one of the most fertile in the Americas, is complex; and the fact is that this subtle work, which paradoxically communicates so many meanings, resists definition. For this reason, this book is intended as an approach to the way in which this artist, in dialogue with the main exponents of this tradition, recognising and sharing some of their ideas, freely expressed her thoughts. 

Gego created an exceptional body of work, one that tensions and overflows the dominant canon. In other words, she strengthened the link between her artistic work and nature and had a different relationship with the project of modernisation than her contemporaries, which led her to develop a kind of impure abstraction, a contaminated geometry that has become increasingly fascinating over the years. Gego's bichos, as she ironically called her creatures, can be interpreted as another of the signs of Venezuelan modernity which, by complementing the utopian and official version of this process, reveals itself to be indispensable. 

Alberto Fernández Rojas

(Ciudad Bolívar, Venezuela, 1987) Graduated with magna cum laude honours in Social Communication and Journalism from the Sergio Arboleda University, specialist in Public Opinion and Political Marketing from the Pontifical Javeriana University, and master's degree in Contemporary Art History and Visual Culture from the Complutense University of Madrid. Although he focuses mainly on the visual arts and culture of Latin America, his writing covers diverse fields and he was recognised in 2013 with the National Prize for Economic Journalism, awarded by the National Association of Financial Institutions (Anif) of Colombia. In addition to his work as a journalist and art critic in the media, he has experience in institutional communication management and public activities of cultural and educational entities.
