OUR HOUSE IS ON FIRE. The cry with which Greta Thunberg addressed the Davos Forum in 2019 lends the title to this book, which vindicates architecture as a reactive domain, capable of playing a transcendent role in the current ecological, climatic and social crisis, and of increasing the resilience of urban ecosystems and the protection of biodiversity. It explores the design challenges and opportunities that arise in these times of crisis, when cities and buildings can no longer be described as isolated objects, but as nodes of material and social systems connected in networks, in continuous interaction with the atmosphere, the geosphere and with the rest of living material systems, through specific architectural and urban plans. From a critical and speculative approach, five complementary themes –metabolism, obsolescence, atmosphere, interaction and biodiversity– are addressed through conversations between theorists and critics of international prestige and teams of Spanish architects, whose exemplary practices have shown sensitivity towards the climate emergency.
